APEX, N.C. – Laura Schoppe, president of Fuentek, LLC, a local consulting firm that provides intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer services, will serve as a panelist for the "Strategies to Offload Patents That Are Doing Nothing for Too Long" session at the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) 2013 Eastern Region Meeting in Boston Sept. 9-10. Ms. Schoppe will focus on the low-cost strategy of passively marketing patented technologies through online listings.

The panel will be moderated by Joy Goswami of the University of Delaware. Other panelists will include Eugene Buff of Primary Care Innovation Consulting and Kelly B. Sexton of North Carolina State University. Panelists will discuss best practices for determining the "license-ability" of technologies and ways to offload patents that are no longer feasible for commercialization. Given the need for technology transfer offices to operate under tight budgets, the panelists will offer strategies for a lean, cost-effective and focused mode of operation. They will present best practices for objectively assessing and managing IP that has already entered the commercialization pipeline.

The AUTM 2013 Eastern Region Meeting will gather technology transfer professionals to discuss strategies for industry-academia partnerships that culminate in successful product commercialization through company formation, licensing or other agreements. They will also share successful practices and new strategies to help weather complicated economic times.

"AUTM meetings give tech transfer professionals the opportunity to meet and collaborate on new strategies and discuss challenges that they face in their day-to-day activities," said Schoppe. "University budgets are more challenging than ever and, with the implementation of the America Invents Act, navigating the patent process for commercialization efforts has become more daunting. I look forward to sharing my insights with this group."
