Yes, you can be an astronaut based on the south pole of the moon! How? With NASA Moonbase Alpha, the first installment in NASA’s massive, multiplayer online (MMO) game. NASA released the game on Valve’s Steam network. In the game, NASA has returned to the moon, with Moonbase Alpha as a small, self-sufficient outpost and the players assuming the exciting role of an astronaut working to further human expansion and research. Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend the annual NASA Spinoff Day on the Hill event sponsored by NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist and the agency’s Innovative Partnerships Program. This event was established to raise awareness about NASA’s spinoffs by informing members of Congress and the public about commercial applications and quality of life benefits originating from NASA technologies and other intellectual property. The highlight of the event was the presence of spinoff companies demonstrating their technology commercialization successes.
