NASA Impacting Our Lives: A View from the NASA Spinoff Day on the Hill

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend the annual NASA Spinoff Day on the Hill event sponsored by NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist and the agency’s Innovative Partnerships Program. This event was established to raise awareness about NASA’s spinoffs by informing members of Congress and the public about commercial applications and quality of life benefits originating from NASA technologies and other intellectual property. The highlight of the event was the presence of spinoff companies demonstrating their technology commercialization successes.

Of particular note was the GATR Technologies® company and Program Manager Roy Priest. One of the company’s inflatable antennas, which had its origins in NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, was set up in the room. Fuentek recently developed a success story for NASA’s Glenn Research Center about this spinoff, and that story was distributed at the event. We were thrilled that our efforts could help to spread the word to Congress, the public, and newly appointed NASA Chief Technologist, Dr. Bobby Braun, about the significant impact that NASA technology transfer has on our life here on Earth.
