Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend the annual NASA Spinoff Day on the Hill event sponsored by NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist and the agency’s Innovative Partnerships Program. This event was established to raise awareness about NASA’s spinoffs by informing members of Congress and the public about commercial applications and quality of life benefits originating from NASA technologies and other intellectual property. The highlight of the event was the presence of spinoff companies demonstrating their technology commercialization successes.

Technology that was originally created by NASA engineers to cool lunar bases has been licensed to SunDanzer Refrigeration Inc. to help people in remote places here on Earth. The Innovation Partnerships Office at NASA’s Johnson Space Center granted the non-exclusive license, with Fuentek facilitating the process. The license has the potential to bring the solar-powered refrigeration systems technology into the developing world and save lives, while also protecting the environment.
